Free Guide: How to Interview Your Potential Doula
Finding the right doula is about more than just a resume; it’s about finding someone who feels like a “calm harbor” for your birth. Use this guide to navigate your initial consultations and ensure you find the perfect match for your family.
Before the Interview: The Vibe Check
Before you dive into the technical questions, take a moment to assess the energy in the room (or on the screen).
- Do I feel like I can be myself around this person?
- Do they listen more than they talk?
- Does my partner feel included in the conversation?
Phase 1: Experience & Training
Understanding their background helps you gauge their comfort level with different birth scenarios.
- What is your training and certification background? (e.g., DONA, CAPPA, or a community-based program).
- How many births have you attended? (There is no “right” number, but it helps set expectations).
- What is your experience with [Your Specific Goal]? (e.g., VBAC, unmedicated birth, twins, or planned C-section).
- Do you have a backup doula? (This is crucial. Ask to meet the backup or see their bio so you aren’t surprised on birth day).
Phase 2: Philosophy & Style
This is where you find out if your “birth vibes” align.
- How do you describe your “doula style”? (Are they a quiet “mothering” presence, or a high-energy coach?).
- How do you work with partners? (A great doula enhances the partner’s role; they don’t replace it).
- What is your relationship like with local hospitals/midwives? (A doula who is well-respected by medical staff can make for a much smoother experience).
- What are your favorite “comfort measures” for labor? (e.g., aromatherapy, TENS machines, rebozo, or hip squeezes).
Phase 3: Logistics & Fees
Clear expectations prevent stress later in pregnancy.
- What is included in your birth package? (How many prenatal/postpartum visits? Do you offer 24/7 text support?).
- When do you go “on-call” for me? (Standard is usually 37 or 38 weeks).
- What is your fee, and do you offer payment plans?
- Do you accept Medicaid or work with [Specific Insurance/HSA]? (Especially relevant for families in states like Washington with high reimbursement!).
Phase 4: The “What If” Scenarios
- What happens if I decide I want an epidural? (A non-judgmental doula will support you whether you go “all-natural” or “all-the-drugs”).
- How do you handle it if the birth plan changes significantly? (e.g., an emergency C-section).
- What is your policy if you miss the birth? (e.g., due to a very rapid labor or illness).
The “Green Flag” Checklist
- [ ] They asked about your fears and goals.
- [ ] They were respectful when discussing medical providers.
- [ ] They didn’t “push” a specific agenda on you.
- [ ] You feel more confident about birth after talking to them than you did before.
